We came for happy hour and enjoyed the wide selection of happy hour appetizer selections. While the price for these 'appetizers' are discounted, the portion size is plenty to satisfy us for a meal. My favorites were the panko crusted calamari steaks and the grass fed beef cheeseburger. The beet salad was also delicious. While we didn't try this time, I heard the poke salad is pretty authentic stuff. I took a peek at the dinner menu and was very impressed with the offerings. However, I will say be prepared to spend $50 - $80 for an appetizer, entree and a drink. I'm looking forward to trying out the dinner menu.

Delicious German/Austrian food! My favorite dish was the jaegerschnitzel. The sauce accompanying it was tasty and wonderfully rich with mushrooms. The wienerschnitzel was also good, although I personally preferred the other schnitzel. The filet mignon was well-made and had a delicious mushroom with blue cheese. However, the best part of the meal was the apple strudel. One of the best apple strudels I've ever had - even better than some of the ones in Vienna! I would come back to Mammoth just for that delicious apple strudel.

The servers are super friendly and the food was great. Tried the Mac and cheese (Austrian style), margarita pizza, stuffed mushrooms, and ahi salad-- all pretty yummy! They also have a 3 hour happy hour every night and a lot of good choices for food and drinks.

Happy hour is a must at this restaurant! I got the ahi poke and it was the best I have ever had! I've had poke from Maui, carlsbad, oceanside, among other places and this tops it all! It's on their happy hour menu for 12$ and some change and it is so worth it! Very healthy and filling. Loads of tuna sashimi, salmon roe, lobster, yes lobster, and yellowtail or albacore, avocado, seaweed salad and wonton chips. This is a meal in itself, and super healthy. For sure will be returning for this! We also ordered the scallops....delicious and fresh! Also got the Mac/cheese which was very very good!

Sweet place! I stopped in on a weekday during the off-season, but it was still pretty happening. HAPPY HOUR 'TILL 7PM?! YES PLS. I was rushing in the door at 6pm to make the deadline, but was pleasantly surprised that I could actually enjoy my whole meal :) I sat at the bar next to the sports fans watching TV. The HH menu is pretty sweet. I got the sweet & spicy wings, which were decent (very crispy exterior). The Sweet potato fries were SWEET (aka awesome. Probably the best I've ever had). The spicy sauce that came with it was great, too. I was very pleased to find the Hofbrau on tap, along with a couple other German beers. I do hope to stop by here again during the ski season (if I can squeeze in to a spot at the bar!).

This was our favorite dinner of our 5 nights in Mammoth. Allow me to start with the service - pure excellence! Our 16 month old was getting a case of the crazies - our server was 100% friendly, attentive and quick on his feet. He got our food and drinks fast and had a to-go container at the ready for a quick exit. We shared the meal for two - It was so yummy! Could be a meal for 3 adults. The food was delish and made for great leftovers. The saukraut was crazy good! Great spot and an excellent way to end our summer Mammoth vacation. Thank you Austria Hof!

As a foodie from L.A. My husband and I wanted to dry something different for Christmas day. So we decided to have dinner here. Service was great. They are very accomodating. Considering how busy it was on Christmas day.Although we came an hour and a half earlier from our reservation. They had a table for us right away. They even let us chose the seat we want. For a starter we ordered the crispy pork belly. I would say it was the highlight of the night! It was so good! Soft in the inside yet crispy outside! It has some kind of a tangy sweet sauce, which complimented the pork, it was just perfect! For main course, we wanted to be adventurous. Wanted to try some exotic taste. So I ordered "rack of elk". It was my first time to try elk. It was somewhat too clean tasting for me. Wasn't expecting that. I had hoped it somewhat tasted a bit gamy. But it tasted too clean! But to be fair. It was cooked perfectly! And seasoned very well. We also ordered "Roasted stuffed half chicken". It was a bit dry, bit the stuffing was pretty tasty. And for our last entree we had "Sausage sampler". It was forgetable. I had hoped it had more seasoning in it. Overall, i would come back to this place and definitely would order pork belly again. But would try to taste other entrees.

Best bar with the best bar tenders we have met yet in Mammoth in the last 20 years. Drinks are top notch. A great Happy Hour.

Came in here for dinner on a rainy Monday afternoon at the perfect time to catch their 4-7 happy hour. The restaurant doesn't open til 5:30 but they serve food at the bar that are full entrees I ordered the fish and chips while my friend ordered the lobster ravioli. Though the portions were a healthy size, we both agreed that the fish seemed slightly under cooked and altogether, pretty unappetizing. The barman was very attentive and handled the bar and additional seating area with ease despite the increasing numbers. I liked the atmosphere in this place it was just a shame about the fish. Will probably swing by for happy hour during the winter season tho. Parking for around 20 or so cars around the lot.

This review is long overdue! This place has amazing food with a very comfortable atmosphere. We came here on the first night we stayed in Mammoth but was too late; they were already getting ready to close shop. The second night around we came much earlier. One of our friends knew one of the waitresses. I believe her name is Rose. She was very sweet and attentive! - Apple wood Bacon Wrapped Shrimp and Goat Cheese-Tomato Tower: Highly recommended! Very flavorful. - Homemade Lobster Ravioli on Tomato sauce: Pretty good but not so memorable - Kaese Spaetzle (Swiss Mac-N-Cheese): Another one of my favorites. Very flavorful and filling. - Wienerschnitzel & Jaegerschnitzel: Both were delicious in my opinion but if had to choose I would pick the Jaegerschnitzel for the mushroom sauce! So good. This is a must for me now whenever I'm in Mammoth!

We made reservations through yelp and we were greeted when we walked in! Our server, Todd, was amazing and made the entire evening most pleasant. The menu provided for many options and the wine list was also well appointed. We order the Crispy Pork Belly for starters and that was a clear sign of the great things to come. The Rack of Elk was stunning and light in flavor. The Beef Wellington was also tender and perfectly cooked. The entire dinner was one of the best moments of our entire trip.

This place is awesome. Just spent eight days here for work. If you are coming to mammoth don't miss it. The happy hour carries amazing prices, with incredible food quality at a discounted price. The bartenders are incredible. Eight nights in a row and still not tired of it. Their full restaurant menu is amazing as well, boasting such German delicacy's as sauerbraten.

Cute little gastropub type restaurant. Excellent friendly service. Food was good but not super impressive. My friend and I split the 3 course meal, which is a steal at around $39. They also have a ton of cheaper wine options starting at $30. My friend and I split the lobster ravioli, the duck and the blueberry cheesecake. The lobster ravioli was good but a bit small and the duck had a little too much sauce on it, but otherwise everything was quite good. They were even nice enough to split up the duck onto two separate plates for us without our asking. The complimentary bread rolls have a hint of rosemary to them and were moist and tasty. We came here on a whim because it was right next to our cabin but we ended up enjoying our meal a lot.

The food here is absolutely delicious. We stayed at the Lodge and went to the bar for happy hour. Shawn was our bartender and he was not only very friendly but he offered fast service when we ordered an appetizer then put in our dinner order to take up to our room. Since we were staying there at the lodge there is a special discounted menu you can select from in addition to the regular menu at the restaurant. You have to go upstairs to let the front desk know that you would like to take advantage of this deal. Shawn actually went upstairs to take care of this for us so we could relax and enjoy our drinks. Our grapefruit and vodka juice was made with freshly squeezed juice and the food was authentic.

Interesting venue here. The bar is a scene with sports, music and hopped-up atmosphere. Dinner was with a very large gregarious party. The servers accepted the group's lack of discipline and served us on terms acceptable to the crowd's desire. Food was good but this place is more about the good time feel.

First off, i have a peanut allergy, and although it isn't that serious of an allergy, it could still hospitalize me. Our server checked with all of the chefs and assured me that they use nothing with peanuts, or peanut oil. I ordered the chicken, but tried different things that my family ordered as well. The food is absolutely outstanding, and i would consider that i have a very refined palette. Just overall a very good quality, and well worth the money restaraunt.

After a day playing in the snow, it doesn't get any better than this. Hillary was soooooo on top of her service and took excellent care of us. Both nights. Yep, we had such a great experience the first night that we came back the next! Nice Happy Hour prices were a pleasant surprise, considering their location steps from Canyon Lodge. An even better surprise was the insane food. Poke stack. Wow. Grass fed burger. Calamari. Escargot w/cheese crostini. Homemade soup. And did I mention the POKE STACK?!?! Mmmmmmmmmmm.

Cute place! It's off the main street of restaurants but worth a trek to try some homemade German food. We had the dinner for 2 which included a little of everything, sausages, spaetzle, schnitzel...omg it was filling. We were dumb enough to order appetizers before the food came but they also were excellent! I had the stuffed mushrooms- so buttery! and my husband had the escargot...I'll take his word for it that they were addicting. The only sad part was they were out of the apple streudel which means we have to come back! Maybe that's not so sad after all!

  • PB D.

Stopped by for Dinner we ordered 2 appetizers, the poke Salad and carpaccio. These were absolutely fantastic. Entrees were Osso Buco and Sauerbraten. To be honest the entrees were a bit disappointing. I recommend ordering several of the apps, they all look real good and skipping main course. Service was friendly and attentive. If you head there straight off the mountain you'll find an active crowded bar filled with friendly folks. We will be stopping by in the future.

Stayed here for a night during a cross country trip. Hotel is nice but little outdated. The food in the restaurant is very good. The red cabbage is bland and not even close to Austrian / German food. Sauerkraut is ok. Sausages are great and taste very authentic. Overall nice place with good food.

We went for happy hour in the bar and the food and service were excellent! Austria Hof was recommended to us by a server from another restaurant in town. We tried and shared a variety of plates, but our favorite was the spaetzle. We will definitely return and recommend to our family and friends.

Best place in Mammoth! Great service, nice private booths. Great Shnitzel and Hot Wine.

    (5)
  • Sharon W.

There is a sign outside the Austria Hof that says "Happy Hour 4-7 p.m. every day!" Nothing on their website indicates that they are closed for a portion of time. Nothing on the door of the restaurant indicates they are closed for a portion of time. Nevertheless, they are currently not open, presumably waiting for the winter season to begin. No idea when they will reopen because no signage provides that information.

Enjoyed a scrumptious Thanksgiving dinner at this kitschy Mammoth landmark with eight friends. Perfect for groups and families, with ample portions, traditional fare, and service that couldn't have been better.

  • Jesse H.

Great happy hour! taco Tuesdays are on point, as well as the bowl of mussels on Thursdays. the staff here is excellent, and Shawn is coolest bar tender in town. Only reason 4 stars instead of 5 is because we ate dinner in the non bar area and it was subpar.

I came here with some friends after a day of snowboarding @ Mammoth. They were obviously fans, as they had come back to this place every day for happy hour and $5 Irish Carbombs. The bar has an extensive happy hour food menu - my friends had tried almost everything and rated them highly. There is a good selection of beer & spirits and a casual but lively atmosphere. As we sat at our table over drinks, I finally noticed a hilarious picture right next to our table (see the photo I posted). CLASSIC!!! Funny because the next table had a map of Mammoth Mountain and the other table over had a picture of a clown. Definitely will give this place props for being unique! After I checked in on my Yelp app, I got a free 12 oz. Rolling Rock draft beer- YAY! A nice place to go for happy hour if you happen to be near Canyon Lodge. Looks like dinner is good too, if you are in the mood for German food.

The bf and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Austria Hof Restaurant. Food: B+ Service: A Atmosphere: B Overall experience: B+ I had the Crispy Maple Leaf Duck that was served two ways: leg confit and grilled breast. I loved the leg confit, which was succulent but not oily. The orange sauce was the perfect compliment. Muy bueno! However, I felt the grilled duck breast was underwhelming next to the leg confit. The mister had the Grilled New York Steak, which was cooked perfect medium rare with a peppercorn sauce that had the right amount of kick. Loved it! It was served with the BEST garlic mash potatoes I've had the pleasure to experience. My notes on the wine: Kenwood, Yalupa Chardonnay: Not as dry as I like. Skip it if you like dry white wines. Woolundry Rd. Cab Sauvignon, Australia: Very smokey, I wasn't a fan. Peachy Canyon Zinfandel, Paso Robles: Perfect blend! Loved it! Overall, a very well-paced and comforting meal. I will definitely revisit when in Mammoth!

The server was extremely friendly and quick. The restaurant was cute. I was a little disappointed that the menu they advertise says the schnitzels are veal but they are pork. I think $26 is steep for a fried pork cutlet. All the food was good not the best, but I am pretty judgmental about Eastern European food.

My bf and I went here for our Valentine's Day dinner and it was sort of romantic.... I really liked the old school Austrian look and online menu which is why I chose this place. We were seated in a booth which was right by the kitchen so it was a little noisy. One of the bussers made the booth right next to us his station for preparing the table settings which was kinda of awkward. I didn't really care for our waitress, she wasn't very attentive and was only interested in selling the V-day specials. I inquired about the regular menu and was dismissed. So we both ordered the surf and turf special and I would say all in all we were pleased. The poke appetizer we ordered was delish, I highly recommend it. The steak was wonderful, it was juicy and tender and the best part of the meal. The lobster was a big disappointment, it was under cooked and lacked flavor. We ordered the apple strudel to go, it was exceptionally good, I would also recommend it. I only gave them 3 stars because it took a month for the restaurant to finally charge us for the dinner, the waitress was pushy and the lobster wasn't cooked all of the way. I don't know if I would be back for dinner, maybe happy hour or lunch.

  • Cheryl G.

Delicious food, awesome happy hour and the bartender gives really great service! When I say good food I mean it, far better than your standard bar grub. We ate here twice during our trip and the only thing that wasn't outstanding was the fish and chips. I thought the beet salad with fried goat cheese and the tuna poke salad were amazing in terms of flavor combinations, textures and were both visually appealing. I would have taken a photo but I was too busy scarfing them down. The Brie en Croute absolutely rocked my world and the bacon wrapped shrimp were so scrumptious... The draft beers came in super frosty pint glasses and had a thin layer of ice just under the foam *drool*. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is that it could use a little fresh paint and other minor updating, also there was the faint smell of beer mash, they may need to deep clean near the kegs.

My go to Place in Mammoth . Love the Happy Hour the staff and Need my Poke Stack. Drinks are great , staff is great , food is great... PLACE IS GREAT !! Best kept secret in Mammoth.. Try it

The food is amazing. Everything tasted fresh and made in house. Our Server was top notch - very friendly and helpful. The dining room is clean and comfortable. The lodge provides a special discount for patrons which was a real nice "perk" since the lodge facilities leave much to be desired (my other post). We would definitely go back to the restaurant but not stay at the lodge.

Great little pub/lounge that was right near our condo. The staff was very friendly, they had happy hour prices running all night and the food was good. We came back the next night and heard some cool music from Jeffrey James which was a treat. Will definitely come back to this place for the next ski trip.

Original Post (12/27/2012): Nothing really outstanding here. If it was not in Mammoth, I would say it was Applebees. I would of rather of had a granola bar and a flask of whiskey. ---------------------------- The owner wanted me to elaborate on my "vague" review questioning it. For that reason I have decided to take away a star from my original 2-star review. Definately a better and more constructive way to improve the restaurant than questioning my opinion. Owners Reponse: Not sure what to even say about such a vague review. Applebees, really? What did you order? (From what I can remember, I ordered stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer which was horrible, soaked and wet. Like it was microwaved. I cant remember my entree, or what my wife ordered at least I was able to forget it). Guess you should have tried our amazing granola. (If this is the case, perhaps you should skim down your menu and remove the items that are not good, and keep the ones you want people to order) We bake it fresh daily and serve it for free in our continental breakfast! That and a shot of McCallum 12 year would be hard to beat! (I actually had your glenfiddich 12 yr I believe, which was the only hope your restaurant had. Considering this, it was expensive, and I could have purchased a bottle from the store that would have been more economical and enjoyable).

I wish I could give this place no stars. I'm from the Los Angeles area and come up to Mammoth a lot to ski during winter and hike/ride horses during the summer/spring. My family and I always come to this restaurant when we come here, and I have never been a fan. Tonight especially, gave me the motivation to write this review. To start, a fricken bug fell from the ceiling, right on my mom's placemat, which could have easily landed in her food had it been a couple minutes later. First off tonight's experience for me, the baked Brie was below par. It was supposed to be runny and warm/hot; instead, it was still in it's solid form and just barely lukewarm. Secondly, I ordered a Sprite and that in itself tasted horrible - like dirt or sewage or rust or something. Thirdly, I ordered the Beef Stroganoff which is okay, not amazing at all. However, my meal was ruined by a DISGUSTING GROSS HAIR IN MY FOOD! Overall, even though I have come here tens of times, tonight was the worst and I refuse to come back. I wish the worst for this restaurant.

We drove into town from LA on a Friday night and this was one of the only places that was still open around 9pm that we could go grab a bite. The entrees here were ridiculously expensive and I opted to be cheap and got the Grilled Veggie Pasta which was already $20. The website seems to indicate that this place is classified as "fine dining", which could probably be the justification for the prices. It feels more like a very nice hole in the wall joint. The service here was good but unless I am craving for something they specifically serve I would go somewhere else .. at an earlier hour.

Great fun bar, tasty austrian food, speatzle and strudel.. great place to hang out after full day of skiing.. remind me of time in Europe.. all to miss is the flowers on the balcony.. in one week we went here every day and we will be back .

Awesome service and delicious food!!! Came here on a Saturday about 6:20p with 8 people hoping to score with their happy hour. It was pretty busy, but they squeezed us in. Since they knew we had come for happy hour the server helped us right away and took our order promptly! We pretty much ordered everything they had on their happy hour menu including a round of shots and some beer. Food was very tasty. I'd recommend the mac and cheese, mushrooms, and bison burger. It was a great atmosphere to hang out with a group of friends right after a long day of boarding! To our surprise, after all that food and round of drinks it only was like $20-25 a person! Austria's happy hour definitely was worth it!!!

We had the German platter for two, delicious and more than we could finish. Good service. A little hard to find, but worth the extra effort. Apple streudel was amazing!

  • Paul K.

As much as I love German food, this place suffered from its recent remodel. All of the beer is in pint glasses now, no more Steins- what's up with that? Food was decent but hardly made me miss the Vaterland- I had the schnitzel which was decent, someone else had the Kassler Rippchen which was way too dry, and I also tried the sausages which were decent.

    (3)
  • Fernando K.

Had the veal schnitzel, which is a typical (and very, very simple to make) austrian recipe. The meat was not tasty at all, the worst $26 schnitzel I've ever had. Oh wait, it's the only one I've ever had that was that ridiculously expensive. Honestly there aren't that many good places in town, but I am 100% sure you can find better value for your money. NOTE: This review is referred to the Austria Hof restaurant. Regarding the hotel, I stayed in one of their rooms for one night during the summer, and it was fine.

We ate dinner here tonight after my guest insisted on it upon hearing there's a German place in town. On the plus side: warm, tasty bread. Negatives: they screwed up a few things, food was so-so. I would hesitate to call this German. My sauerkraut was off, and the whole meal was swimming in grease. Horrendous prices to boot. No thank you.

Stayed here for three nights and had dinner here on 3/29/14. The food was excellent and the service was also. Lively bar scene with lots of happy hour choices. Three of us had Osso Buco. It was the best I've ever had. Very helpful and friendly wait staff. This is now my go-to place to eat in Mammoth.

This is actually one of the best restaurants in Mammoth. Everything we ate was amazing both times I've been here. Much more than typical Austrian food. The scallops were perfect. The poke salad was really fresh and tasty. Good wine list too.... We will definitely go back.

  • Leigh B.

The best Ahi ever. I loved it here before but they have changed it up a bit and it is even better! I eat Ahi almost anytime it is on the menu, and their's is the best. My husband loves the German dishes, and my daughter had the filet and loved it. This a must visit every time we come up.

I'm an Austrian living in the states, so when I saw the Austria hof I was very excited that I would be able to get some real Austrian food. And even thought the menu is really more a fusion of mainly American cuisine with some Austrian German fusion cuisine, I was very impressed with my Wiener schnitzel and my friends dishes were also outstanding. We were still talking about the fish dish the next day.

Love this place after a full day of skiing and boarding. We went for happy hour and love the lively atmosphere and prices. Definitely go on taco Tuesday for cheap eats and drinks. The bar staff here is really friendly, and do a great job.

Went to the bar and the ambience was not what you would expect from the name or outside decor. Very cozy great vibe. Food was delicious. The siracha chicken wings were flavorful with the right amount of kick. Panko breaded calamari and scallops perfectly done. The burger was very juicy.

We always come back here for the happy hour after a day of skiing. Very easy walk from Canyon Lodge to here. The selection of happy hour appetizer and drinks are sufficient. The capaccio and scallop are always good protein sources. They have 2-3 TVs at the bar that people can watch games. Overall, it is a nice and cozy happy hour place for us. This year they added one musician in the afternoon. :)

**Review for restaurant only (and happy hour at that)** This place really hit a home run with me. They have great beers on tap, and the happy hour appetizers are unbeatable. We had the brie en croute, chile shrimp pizza, ahi salad, creme brulee, beef carpaccio, and a few others that I can't remember. Each was wonderful and the bartenders was quite friendly. Whenever I come to Mammoth Lakes, this will be the place I go for happy hour eats and drinks.

We arrived on 6/28/13 at around 6:00 pm. We were a party of 4. At first there was no one at the front than a man came by and suggested we take a seat in the bar as there would be a wait. There was NO ONE else waiting and the Resturant was virtually empty. It appeared the man was actually training another guy and we seemed to be an inconvenience to him. We sat by the front door for about 10 minutes watching the guys walk back and forth while we were totally ignored. We finally decided that this wasn't the place we wanted to enjoy a nice dinner and left. Is this REALLY the way to treat customers???

We were headed to Mammoth for my husband's 40th birthday and decided in advance to book a table for 9 at Austria Hof. They made it special by baking him a cake on the house! Having traveled to Germany, I'd say their German food is authentic and very good. Highlights were the schnitzel and sausage dishes. Their purple cabbage is a nice side dish, as well. Service is friendly, with a mom-and-pop vibe. We've been here before and will be back again!

  • Craig M.

My dad and I loved this place after a long day of skiing. We shared the German sampler plate and had a couple of German beers. The sausage and schnitzel were fantastic. I'm sure people commented on the value not being great, but it's literally on the mountain of course they will charge slightly higher prices. I was bummed I didn't do the check in for a rolling rock deal, but so it goes. All in all a superb authentic German ski dining experience.

  • Jennifer S.

I always love the Austria Hof. The ambiance is quaint and comfortable; the service was great, in spite of it being pretty busy; the food was delicious. Great place to enjoy. While it is considered fine dining, it's important to keep in mind that it is located in a beautiful mountain village, so it is a more casual environment. Prices are relative to this mountain town. I enjoyed the Caesar Salad and the Roasted Stuffed Half Chicken. I always recommend Austria Hof, whether for after-ski happy hour or full-on gourmet dinners. A can't miss.

Hard to write a full review when I am still confused by no Riesling by the glass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Legit food and friendly waiter. The escargot was on point which made me very happy(not chewy), the Duck Ravioli were decent and we shared the Platter for 2. Swiss sausage was my favorite!

We came to check out the happy hour here after a friend told us to check in yelp for the rolling rock deal. We each got a free 12 ounce rolling rock beer. Rose the waitress recommended the chicken wings which were actually really tasty. We also got the delicious sweet potato fries and mac & cheese. The generous portions were served on large plates. With all this good food and drinks we ended up ordering more rounds of drinks and had a real good time at this popular and packed happy hour!

This poor place needs an update. We went because it was right across the street from our condo. Convenient yes, delicious NO. One would think that a Bavarian/Austrian restaurant could actually cook a Weiner Schnitzle but mine was so overdone it could have been the tongue of the shoe that the Donner Party gnawed upon. My daughter ordered the Rouladen, While the beef was tender the bacon was undercooked, potato pancakes were soggy. My son in laws NY steak was ordered Med rare. What was delivered to the table was possibly an overcooked sirloin. He sent it back a fresh plate was delivered quickly but was underdone and tasteless. $10 for a bowl of buttered noodles, Puleeeze! I give one star for drinks. They were strong enough to help me temporarily forget that I was being taken. Our server Rose gave it her all despite being understaffed that evening.

My husband is German and I'm Czech so we were bound to eat here at some point. We finally did for his birthday. I admit, I'm spoild by having this food home cooked but it was much better than I expected! Super cute decor on the inside and the beer...OMG, the beer. Even if you're not a fan of German food, go here for the beer. By far some of the best beer I've ever had. We'll definitely go back on our next trip up.

The only German food in Mammoth! There location is walking distance from Canyon Lodge (Hut II). The menu has been redone in the last year, and improved significantly. Many traditional options are now available which is great to see. The Roulade (Rolled Seasoned Beef) was excellent, but not quite as good as my German Aunt's home made version. Best I've had from a restaurant which clearly cannot follow a recipe which requires 8 hours of cooking. The pistachio nut crusted elk with blackberry and port sauce was excellent. Although thinking back to last nights dinner, there was no pistachio nut crusting on the meat. The savory flavor of this elk (farm raised) had a much milder flavor than those I have harvested in northern Idaho in the wild. The service was excellent. Our server checked back with us very regularly to take care of any needs. An additional person ensured our large water glasses were always topped up; a great thing when you are dehydrated from altitude, dry air and your on mountain workout.

I saw the ads in the travel brochures in our Mammoth Condo, which included a copy of their menu. I love Bavarian food, but I don't have it very often. It was pricey, but considering I had been cooking 3 nights already, I figured I deserved it. The menu is clearly posted on the outside of the door. This restaurant does not cater to organic or vegetarian anything, so if you want that kind of thing, then go somewhere else. We went when it opened (I am an early bird). We were greeted warmly and all questions were answered well, as the menu was foreign to most of the table. The menu also explained what every item was. DH and I split the German sampler which included brats, Wiener schnitzel, etc, and sides of a potato pancake, spaetzel and red cabbage. $48 for two. I love Wiener schnitzel, and that is what the DD ordered (it tastes like chicken fried steak, I told her). $26 . DS had the duck with an escargot appetizer and an apple strudel dessert. This three course meal was $39. Full bar. Good draft beer selection.

Was very surprised to see all the low ratings from my fellow yelpers, my only complaint was the coffee... And maybe the interior decor, but I'm not looking for neat interior decor when i go out to eat, so on that note it deserves at least four stars. Our meal was excellent. I had the Beef Rouladen cooked to perfection with spaetzle and veggies all done very well. My son had the Crispy Duck and my daughter had the steak and lobster special (it was Christmas, but yes she's the princess) everyone ate until they were stuffed and had left overs to breakfast the next day. The owner/manager guy waited on us, he was top notch of course. I was all set to give five stars and had to reserve one for the mildly scorched coffee, damn. How can you scorch the coffee serving along side creme brulee with fresh berries? Almost a perfect meal.

We have been to Austria Hof before, and really like the German food and nice warm welcoming decor and vibe. Thought this would be a really fun place to celebrate Christmas Eve this year. However, we were sorely disappointed in the service this year. We get that it's busy season and a holiday, but the lack of attention by our server was really over the top. It was really our busboy/water guy that saved the night for us, calling our waiter's attention for us when we needed him (and keeping us VERY well hydrated during our long waits). The thing that really put things over the top for us, and the reason for the negative review is the waiter's handling of an issue with our meal. Our son ordered the bouillabaisse which they chose to garnish with mussels, yet 2 of the 3 would not open, and everyone knows this isn't good ... We brought this to the waiters attention (through a message delivered by the water guy) and he came over and said he should not eat the mussels (duh) and it would "take too long" to get anything out if he kitchen so he would "knock a couple of bucks" off of the meal. We were pretty sure he was right about the wait, based on our service up to that point but I wasn't too happy about them suggesting my son finish the dish in which the offending mussels were swimming, however in the end we just moved on. The rest of our meal was fine ... The food was really good, large portions, everyone was happy enough. But when the "water guy" brought the bill, you guessed it ... No discount. We almost allowed this to pass, but when the entrees are over $26 each you kind of expect great quality and service, so we mentioned it (again, to the "water guy" as most of our interaction was with him) and the waiter arrived with a revised check with $5 off. Gee thanks. Anyway, I'm writing this review as a returning customer who has always been a fan of this place, because there is definitely opportunity for major improvement here. I hope they take this constructive criticism and work on improving the service, because otherwise this place would be highly recommended.

We probably would have never thought to eat here if we had not been staying at the hotel and it was totally blizzardy outside. We went in with very low expectations and were pleasantly surprised. Maybe I'm holding the decor and the actual location against my experience, but that does play into the review, i suppose. It can't all be based on food. So i think if you could split out the review, the food would get a 3.5, the decor a 2 and the service a 3.5. The restaurant itself is fairly warm and cozy with German decor, complete with a how-can-you-hate-on a cute Coo-Coo Clock. We headed downstairs around 8 and were seated in a section where we could still crane our necks and watch the Olympics. The service was very friendly and nice if a bit slow to take our order, but we were in no rush as we were basically trapped here for the night. I ordered the Duck and Tobin had the Elk. Both were cooked nicely and had good flavor and really i couldn't complain about anything. It was not the best meal I've had, but really it would stand up to an average LA meal. After dinner we hung out in the bar and watched the rest of the Short Track Skating and were very entertained by the rowdy and loud locals. The bar is definitely a fun dive-y place that reminds you of your friend's dark, wood paneled basement. I most likely won't be returning back to the Hof, simply because I usually stay closer to The Village, but that's not saying if i were in the area i wouldn't make another visit.

I hadn't been to the Austria Hof for dinner in many years. Many years ago, I remembered not finding anything other than a potato pancake to eat as a vegetarian. This time seemed more promising -- the menu we saw at our condo listed a grilled veggie lasagna. Unfortunately, when we got there, there was no lasagna on the menu. There was nothing vegetarian on the menu at all, actually, except for a couple of appetizers. We asked if there was anything they could do and our waiter said no. We pressed him to ask the chef, and reluctantly, he said he would. The chef said that he could make a shrimp and lobster pasta without any of the seafood so it was just vegetables and noodles. I agreed -- we weren't about to head anywhere else when the roads were so icy. The meal wasn't very exciting. A few vegetables, pasta, too much butter collected in the bottom of the bowl. And then the bill came -- they charged $29 for the pasta! My meal was the most expensive of anyone at our table, and my parents had ordered osso bucco and wienerschnitzel. We didn't press our waiter about it since he did end up giving us 15% off the bill instead of 10% (my parents had a coupon), but it just felt wrong to have paid so much for a meal that cost less than $5 to make and I could make better at home. For you meat eaters, my parents did enjoy their meal. I just wouldn't bring a vegetarian here unless you were absolutely certain they'll have something on the menu and with a reasonable price for what's being offered.

After a long day and some photography at Devil's Postpile NM recently, we went to the Austria Hof Restaurant for dinner. I have had German food once previously at the Amana Colonies in Iowa, so it's safe to say that I don't know a lot about it. I couldn't decide between the Jaeger Shnitzel, the duck or the bison so I ended up ordering the bison after asking the waitress what her she liked the best. I have had buffalo jerky once but never actually for a meal so I was interested to see what it was like. It looked and tasted like beef but much more tender in my opinion. It could have had more taste and the mashed potatoes were pretty weak but I liked the berry sauce that the meat was sauteed in. There is nothing cheap on the menu but it was definitely an experience. I'd probably go back to try the Jaeger Shnitzel.

Our family of four loved this place. The food is excellent, for adults and also for kids. The ahi tuna was awesome, though you might not order such a thing in a place so far from the sea. Not only was it perfectly (un)cooked, the sesame sauce was perfectly balanced, with broccoli, carrots, and green beans just tender enough. We had the beef carpaccio starter, conversation-stopping delicious. The white chocolate cheesecake dessert was the best I've had, though I'm not normally a cheesecake fan. The kids meals are actual meals. Our first time here we had the sausage plate, which was solid but not stellar like the tuna. Our waitress seemed to be handling most of the room, and she was a real pro, knowing exactly when to bring the courses, and when and when not to show up. The atmosphere is Austrian, kind of loud as others have noted, with a raucous happy hour. You have to be okay with loud ambience and sort of a dark stale heavily-wooded decor. What can I say, we tried Z-bar Ranch (local burger hot spot) and Toomeys, they were both good, less expensive, and much higher Yelp rating, but in my opinion neither is in the same league as Austria Hof. We'll be back. For success on its own terms it gets 5 stars from me.

Walking back to my friend's condo up in Mammoth, we passed by the 'Hof (I only used the apostrophe because I wanted to make it seem like I was abbreviating Hasselhoff), and we saw the happy hour specials, which seemed pretty sweet. We went up and changed and hopped on down to the joint, and it didn't look too bad upon entry and reaching the bar in the back. I even went to the bathroom and it looked pretty sweet. The drink deals were pretty standard, good stuff if the things you like are on HH. However, it kind of defeats the purpose when they only have one staffer, who is also the bartender, working the back. Especially when it's pretty busy. One of the BCS bowls were on, so I'm assuming that made this place more packed than usual. However, we got there with an hour of HH to spare and barely got in two rounds of drinks. We even got charged full price for a couple of the drinks we tried ordering before the end but didn't get in until after (not our fault). There is also food on happy hour, and for some reason they have mistaken or misnamed many of the dishes. My friend ordered "Calamari" and got something that looked like FISH STICKS. No joke! I ordered beef carpaccio, and it was definitely the strangest BC that I've ever ordered. It made me wonder if they even knew what the dishes were supposed to be or look like. The only thing that someone ordered that wasn't too far off was the Bruchetta Pizza. Whoopdeedoo. As much as I hate to give this place 2 stars, it just didn't deserve anything higher than that.

I've tried being severely annoyed with Austria Hof but the quality of the food and Robert the bartender's great attitude, friendly demeanor and good service defused my false-advertising fury. Mammoth is stupid expensive, which is annoying, so when we saw the almost continuous happy hour "everyday" advertisements for Austria Hof on the Mammoth Channel (Channel 72) while hanging in our deluxe Motel 6/Travelodge accommodations, we jumped at the offer and made the slippery trek up to Austria Hof on afternoon after a great day on the slopes. Upon arrival, we noticed that the menu stated that Happy Hour prices were only valid on weekdays. However, the commercials said otherwise, and the combination of exhaustion, hunger, thirst and near-blizzard conditions meant we weren't going anywhere, so we ordered a bunch of food off the bar menu. The food is GREAT. Good portions, very high quality, very tasty, and great presentation. Pricey, yes - they only take a few bucks off for Happy Hour, but it was filling and really, really good. We had the sliders, sweet potato fries, chicken wings and some awesome thing I can't describe that involved cheese. They have great beers on tap, including a $2 draft special when we were there. The atmosphere is comfortable, with a couple of flat-screens playing sports. Robert is friendly and will leave you alone if you want, or chat away. They have chips and great salsa during Happy Hour hours, and it has never been too crowded. So, we were stuffed and sleepy and still had to get down the hill without sliding into anyone else, so we asked for the check. Full price, no Happy Hour discount. I brought it up, and Robert said the TV commercials must be a mistake. I asked if they'd honor the deal, and he said that he couldn't. Normally, that is an absolute guarantee that I'll never be back, but Robert took the time to apologize and explain as best he could, so I have been back - a bunch of times. Bottom line - yes, pricey by LA standards, reasonable by Mammoth standards, with above average food and a really great bar. It is off the beaten path, so they're never too slammed - I suggest heading up there for a drink and food.

2.5 stars avg! Come on...I ordered the poke salad based on the servers suggestion. Damn good! Fresh ahi taco poke in mammoth?!?!? They did it! Everything else was a bonus!

The Jagerschnitzel was like nothing I had in 1 year living in Germany. Slices of veal - never seen that. Ok but salty sauce. Red cabbage had no tang to it. My wife's fish was not super fresh but well prepared. Portions are large. Service was good. Three stars is generous - I'd go with 2.5 if that were an option
